On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Sebastian dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction—and one night, into a passionate kiss. The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Sebastian, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think...
What can I say about Sometimes It Happens? That is kept me in suspense the entire novel? Well yes, yes it did! :) I really enjoyed Sometimes It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt. I am definitely keen on reading her other books, because this one was a definite suspense-keeper.
It starts off with Hannah being dumped and cheated on by her boyfriend Sebastian on the last night of junior year. Now everything's not just hunky-dory, and being alone for the summer with her BFF going to Maine, Ava's boyfriend keeps her company. But their friendship turns into something more, and we left in suspense for what happened with them. It's now senior year, and through chapters, it is revealed more and more what happened.
I wasn't sure that I would enjoy the chapter structure of this novel, but I actually quite did. It was never confusing to me, and it was nicely crafted. I liked knowing a little bit more and more, with each chapter going in the present, which is the first day of senior year, and then going back to the summer. I loved Lauren Barnholdt's writing as well, it was really funny and I loved Hannah.
I loved Hannah's friend, Lacey, and how Hannah always stood by her and Lacey stood by her. Noah was also a sweetheart, how he always wanted the best for her. It was truly true love. Ava, on the other hand, was a character that often made Hannah do things she wasn't ready for, and I'm glad the truth was revealed between what their friendship really meant for each other.
The ending I wasn't totally crazy about, but it was still a great novel. I'm glad everything was nicely wrapped up in the end, and it was a satisfying read. :)
Likes: Hannah + Noah, Lacey, the humour, comedy, decisons that Hannah had to face, the suspense, summer, senior year, facing truths, love, nicely crafted novel
Dislikes: the ending I wasn't too crazy about
