Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy that takes over the minds of human hosts while leaving their bodies intact. But Wanderer, the invading “soul” who occupies Melanie’s body, finds its former tenant refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.
As Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of Jared, a human who has avoided invasion and lives in hiding, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she’s never met. Soon Wanderer and Melanie- reluctant allies-set off to search for the man they both love.
Featuring one of the most unusual love triangles in literature, The Host is a riveting and unforgettable novel about the persistence of love and the essence of what it means to be human.
Do not connect this book to Twilight, AT ALL. They are nothing alike when it comes to format and the writing. I myself was skeptical when my cousin (who gave me this book) told me that it was simply sensational and that Stephenie Meyer had a way with words. I did not believe her but just half-heartedly agreed and didn’t consider even reading it (I’m not a big fan of sci-fi). Don’t get me wrong, I adore Twilight but I must agree it has its flaws with the characters and the plot. The story had a lot of potential but I feel that Stephenie Meyer sugarcoated everything.
This book however was marvelous just like my cousin described. Stephenie Meyer gave us a whole new world to explore with beautiful descriptions and characters with MUCH more depth. At the beginning of the book I was still very skeptical but only because of my prejudice and because I hated the protagonist from the third page. See, this book is about creatures called “Souls” who replace OUR souls in our bodies. So basically they takeover our bodies while we—our minds fade away. I generally like the “badass” characters of most shows/books/movies but I don’t like evil people. To me at the beginning, evil Wanda (short for Wanderer; the soul) was the antagonist who took over poor, innocent, Melanie’s body. I did however grow to like Wanda much MORE than I liked Melanie. Wanda is not evil at ALL and is much sweeter than Melanie who is more outspoken with her thoughts. There is a twist however; Melanie didn’t fade away. She’s still a part of her body and can still share her thoughts (much to Wanda’s dismay).
At the beginning of this book Wanda and Melanie DESPISE each other (for their own separate reasons), so Melanie decides to make Wanda feel guilty by sharing her memories of herself and her lover, Jared. This however does not help Melanie at all because Wanda stars to develop feelings for him too, (it has something to do with the fact that they share a body). Things get much more complicated, with many more twists and turns. You must DEFINITELY read this!
Likes: Wanda, Melanie, Ian, Doc, and JAMIE!
Dislikes: THE SEEKER!
Jared was okay...
