Belonging to the minor gentry, the Bennets live at Longbourn in Hertfordshire. Mother of five daughters, Mrs Bennet’s chief interest in life is their marriage prospects. At neighbouring Netherfield, the arrival of a rich young bachelor, Charles Bingley, his two sisters and his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy fires Mrs Bennnet’s aspirations.
The comedy which ensues, of ardent declarations and proposals, of rejections, infidelities, elopement and finally – if you will believe it – happy marriages, has made this Jane Austen’s most popular.
I heard about this story a long time ago but only after a long time did I ever read it. I had so many high expectations for this novel when I started to read it. Not all of my expectations were met but I enjoyed the book all the same.
Of course everyone knows that this book is written in 'olden day' English. I too knew that when I started reading, but what I didn't realize was that it would make it harder to connect to the characters and tiring to interpret some of their 'lingo'.
I love the plot-line of this book so much but I felt really tired whenever I read this because I often found myself trying to translate certain phrases into modern day English. I sometimes found myself, putting this book off.
One thing that I somewhat object to, is how Darcy and Elizabeth formed a romantic relationship.I felt that it was a bit fake/too soon when Elizabeth's feelings for him started to change.
Anyway, I really liked this story, and if you haven't read it yet, you definitely should!
Likes: Jane, Elizabeth, Charles, Darcy, etc.
Dislikes: Caroline, Lydia.
